On Thursday, Chany Ockert facilitated a presentation and discussion on Gracious Space, an approach to conflict resolution. Gracious Space is a spirit and setting where we invite the stranger and learn in public. While Gracious Space is not a way to silence opposing or unpopular views, it is a way to create more vibrant and respectful conversations.
Ockert described one element of Gracious Space as “to invite the stranger.” No human being alive today has wisdom for all topics in all situations. We understand that intellectually. However, in the midst of a conflict, we often dig into our positions, believing that we have all of the right information and that the opposing side has all of the wrong information. Inviting the stranger allows us to receive alternative perspectives from an outside view.
