The 2013 Montana Legislature is just around the corner, and promises to be another important session for nonprofit sector-wide issues like the Montana Endowment Tax Credit, as well as decisions that affect specific types of organizations. It's not too early to think about your organization's strategy to communicate with legislators — in fact, waiting until the session starts to figure out your strategy is too late!

This workshop features two seasoned lobbyists from Helena, as well as Tim Sievers, who before coming to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flathead County worked in state and national legislative offices. Each will share their experience and knowledge about these critical questions:

*What is a nonprofit legally able to do?
*What is lobbying, and how does it differ from education about your work?
*How does the legislative process work in Montana, and how can you keep apprised of what bills are before the Senate and House?
*What are the most effective ways to communicate with legislators?
*What are some critical mistakes to avoid?

Nonprofit Salary Survey
 
Montana Nonprofit Association’s Salary Survey is one of MNA’s more requested resources, and they are in the process of updating it in partnership with the National Council of Nonprofits and Columbia Books & Information Services.  The deadline to fill out the survey has been extended to Friday, May 4.  If your organization is a member of MNA, you will receive a free copy of the report.  If not, consider joining or receive the report at a 50% discount.  By the way, all 501(c)3 organizations should select “Charitable/Service Organization” on the first screen.

Tamarack Grief Resource Center

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Flathead Program Coordinator will facilitate TGRC’s grief support and education programs with special focus on the Flathead Valley region. The FPC will assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of grief programs. In addition, the FPC will assist with fundraising and public relations including drafting and editing grant proposals, public speaking, and event planning. The FPC is the lead TGRC staff in the Flathead Valley acting as the liaison between TGRC and the Flathead community.  The preferred applicant for this position will have completed a Master’s degree from a school of Social Work or Counseling.  Master’s program graduates who are seeking supervision for clinical licensure are encouraged to apply.  All applicants with interest in TGRC’s mission and programs will be considered.  Interested applicants are asked to send the following materials to TGRC: Letter of Interest, Resume, Names and Phone Numbers of Three References, and Writing Sample (500 -750 words). Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation
 
The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation Executive Director is a full time salaried position with a 40 hour work week. This position is based at the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation office located in Hungry Horse, MT at the USFS Hungry Horse Ranger Station. Qualifications may be met by any combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the job description. Typically, the Executive Director will have graduated from an accredited college with a major in wilderness management, recreation, natural resource management, outdoor education or closely-related field and have at least two years experience in a supervisory and administrative capacity. 2012 State of the Sector Survey Results
 
The Nonprofit Finance Fund has released the results of the nonprofit economic conditions survey for 2011.  Montana nonprofits were well represented in this national survey.  Plus, based on historic participation of Flathead nonprofits in statewide surveys, these results are significant to the Flathead.  The survey results can be filtered by a number of criteria including state, type of nonprofit, operating budget size and basic, emergency service.  See how your organization compares here on topics including workforce, financial health, service demands, government funding, board engagement, and management decisions:

Accepting Recurring, Online Donations
 
2011 became the tipping year for online giving.  A full 65% of donors of all age categories gave at least one gift on-line, according to the Cygnus Donor Survey (from Donor-Centered Fundraising) of over 17,000 American donors.  Even when the donor received a print direct mail piece, 29% made these donations in response to the mail piece online.  Of those who do give online, 61% reported that giving online was their preference.

Increase the Lifetime Value of your Supporters – Create a Recurring Gift Program
 
If you want to implement one of the lowest-cost fundraising programs that will increase donations and relationships with your donors and create a stable source of income with relatively low administrative commitment, consider implementing an online recurring gift program.

Local Options for Accepting Online and Recurring Donations
 
All of the banks and credit unions in the Flathead offer options for nonprofits to accept online, recurring donations through their Merchant Account services.  Some banks such as Glacier Bank and Rocky Mountain Bank are in the process of hosting seminars to discuss their in-house services.  Other banks and credit unions such as First Montana Bank, First Interstate Bank, Valley Bank, Whitefish Credit Union, Mountain West Bank, partner with area payment processors, NxGen or First Data.
 
The options range from your nonprofit staff handling, processing and protecting the donor’s banking or credit card information to the bank, credit union or payment processors handling, processing and protecting the donor’s banking or credit card data.
